Apple dogadali się wreszcie z czołowymi wytwórniami muzycznymi i ogłosili, że będą sprzedawać muzykę bez zabezpieczeń DRM. Na początek powinno pojawić się około 8 milionów wolnych od ograniczeń kawałków, potem ta liczba ma zwiększyć się do 10 milionów. Docelowo wszystkie utwory mają być wolne od zabezpieczeń. Dotychczas pliki bez DRM oferowała, za pośrednictwem iTunes, jedynie firma EMI.

Inne nowości w jabłkowym sklepie muzycznym to zmiana polityki cenowej. Apple ma zamiar zróżnicować trochę ceny oferowanej muzyki. Oprócz aktualnie obowiązującej oferty 99 centów za kawałek, dojdą jeszcze dwie kategorie - $0,69 za starsze utwory i $1,29 za megahity. Na koniec dobra wiadomość dla posiadaczy iPhone’a - do pobierania muzyki nie potrzeba już dostępu przez WiFi. Nowy sklep iTunes da się obsługiwać przez połączenie 3G.

Plotka potwierdziła się i podczas wczorajszej konferencji MacWorld Apple oficjalnie zapowiedział MacBooka Pro z 17-to calowym ekranem. Jest to, według przedstawicieli firmy, najcieńsza i najlżejsza siedemnastka na świecie. Wyświetlacz ma rozdzielczość 1900 x 1200, kontrast 700:1, a za dodatkowe $50 może być nawet matowy (nareszcie).

Pozostała specyfikacja nie odbiega zbytnio od jego mniejszego, 15-to calowego brata, za wyjątkiem baterii, która ma utrzymywać komputer przy pracy przez całe 8 godzin (o ile korzystacie ze zintegrowanej karty graficznej). Niestety płacimy za to brakiem możliwości samodzielnej jej wymiany. Po około tysiącu ładowań MacBooka będziecie musieli oddać do serwisu, który zamontuje nowy akumulator. Kolejną niezbyt dobrą wiadomością jest sugerowana cena detaliczna podstawowej wersji, która wyniesie $2799 (około 8400 zł).

Wygląda na to, że Apple zamierza wejść na teren dotychczas zajmowany głównie przez Google. Pierwszym krokiem jest ogłoszona wczoraj, wzorowana na Google Docs, usługa iWork.com. Ta internetowa aplikacja zintegrowana będzie z desktopowym iWork i umożliwi dzielenie się dokumentami ze znajomymi, którzy będą mogli dodawać własne notatki czy nawet edytować dany plik. Uproszczając można powiedzieć, że będą to takie Dokumenty Googla z interfejsem iWorka. Na początek dostępna będzie wersja beta, bezpłatna dla każdego, potem Apple zapewne przekształci usługę w kolejne źródło dochodów. O cenach na razie nic nie wiadomo.

The wait is finally over. The wringing of hands and chewing of nails can stop, consumers can shift back from the edge of their seats… iTunes has finally gone DRM-free.

Kinda.

Apple’s frankly long-overdue announcement has arrived and from today, 80% of songs downloaded from UK iTunes will be available stripped of horrible copy protection, with the remaining 20% following over the next few weeks.

LaCie already delivered two new pieces in its collection yesterday, but apparently the 2big Quadra simply demanded its very own day of promotion. The classically styled (thanks, Neil Poulton) drive arrives with twin bays for up to 3TB of storage and support for four RAID modes including the traditional RAID 0 / 1. Transfer speeds can hit up to 165MB/sec through eSATA (3Gbits/sec in RAID 0), and the the quadruple interface — USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 — means that whatever machine you happen upon will likely be equipped to handle it. Moreover, it’s fully compatible with Apple’s Time Machine software and comes bundled with Genie Backup Manager Pro / Intego Backup Manager Pro for those in need. It’ll be yours for the taking later this month (in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB sizes) starting at $299.99.

We’ll wager you didn’t know Macworld was going on today, did you? Pathetic jokes aside, Western Digital has lined up a pair of launches today in San Francisco to coincide with Apple’s final Macworld keynote, as we’re treated to the My Passport for Mac portable HDD and the My Book Mac Edition. Truthfully, the only real difference between these drives and their vanilla counterparts is the pre-format process; with these, they both come “pre-formatted for Mac,” saving you the tiresome task of converting ‘em to HFS+ Journaled yourself. Additionally, these USB 2.0 drives are made to work “seamlessly” with Apple’s Time Machine backup software, and they’ll arrive in capacities including 320GB and 500GB (My Passport) / 1TB (My Book). Both units should be available now for between $129.99 and $179.99.

Koncern z Redmond po raz kolejny poruszył kwestię cen, jakie obowiązują na produkty firmy Apple. Reporterzy amerykańskiego wydania magazynu Computerworld relacjonują, iż w wysłanym do prasy w poniedziałek e-mailu Microsoft znów zwrócił uwagę na to, że klienci chcący nabyć sprzęt i oprogramowanie Apple płacą za produkty, które oferują podobne możliwości, co rozwiązania konkurencyjne. Ruch Microsoftu wydaje się nie być przypadkowy - tego samego dnia, 5 stycznia, ruszyła w San Francisco kolejna edycja targów Macworld Conference & Expo. tech.wp.pl

While Phil hasn’t mentioned it in the keynote just yet, it looks like iTunes might be getting a big catalog overhaul, with most major labels finally offering up DRM free tunes. Our tipster mentioned DRM free goodies from Virgin, Sony BMG, American Recording and more (iTunes Plus has mainly been limited to EMI and some independents so far), and that most previously purchased songs are now upgradable for the same old price of $0.30 a song. We’re still digging around on the iTunes Store trying to figure this out — it’s offering to upgrade our library, but the transaction won’t go through yet — and we’ll obviously know more if it gets a keynote mention. Let us know if you have any luck picking up those non-EMI MP3s on your end.

Update: As you’ve you probably noticed in the liveblog, Apple just made this very much official, and announced that some 8 million songs from all the major labels will indeed be DRM free, with a full ten million planned by the end of the quarter. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also announced a new pricing structure for tracks, including a new $0.69 tier and a $1.29 one, which music companies will apparently be able to use at their own discretion. And, to keep things really spicy, the company has also announced that music store downloads are now finally available over 3G, and at the same price and the same quality.

After hearing stories about Apple rejecting email clients from the iTunes store because they duplicate the functionality of Apple’s own Mail app, I’ve started to get a little nitpicky about Mail. For example, it’s annoying that Mail won’t let you compose in landscape mode. A free app called Easy Writer cleverly works around that, though, making your mobile email experience a little bit more user-friendly.

Easy Writer can’t change the Mail app itself, so it uses a bit of a hack to get the job done. Start a new message in Mail, then open up Easy Writer for glorious landscape mode. You can even pinch and zoom the text for better readability while you’re working. When you’re done with the message, tap the “send to Mail” button, and you’re back in Mail with a completed message, ready to send. It’s a bit of extra work, but until Apple adds these features to Mail, it’s the best of its kind.

Nie może tam zabraknąć ekipy Engadgeta, która — specjalnie dla was — na żywo (z netbooka ukrytego pod swetrem) będzie informować co nowego wymyśliła firma z Cupertino. To wszystko już o 18:00. Ma to być ostatnia taka impreza z udziałem Apple. Ponoć nie ma to nic wspólnego ze stanem zdrowia Jobsa. Praktycznie od początku grudnia 2008 firma iLuv co tydzień wypuszczała nowy budzik, ale najlepszy kąsek zachowała na CES. iMM183 to zegarek z alarmem, podwójną stacją dokującą do iPhone’a / iPoda Touch i radiem. Oprócz ładowania zabawek Apple (i innych poprzez AUX), radyjko iLuv ostrzeże was przed zbliżającym się huraganem czy inną klęską żywiołową. Informacja o tyle aktualna, że zamiecie śnieżne przy obecnej pogodzie to tylko kwestia czasu. Dlatego najlepiej siedzieć w domu i śledzić rozwój sytuacji na CES 2009 za pośrednictwem Engadgeta.

Man, iLuv’s on a roll like no other. Practically every week since the onset of December ‘08 the company has pushed out a new alarm clock of some kind, and it has apparently saved the big boy for CES. Announced today, the iMM183 Hi-Fi Dual Dock Alarm Clock with Weather Band Radio promises to charge both you and your lover’s iPod / iPhone 3G while providing NOAA emergency alerts of impending weather-related doom. There’s also an obligatory auxiliary input for non-Apple devices, and the LED warning indicator should do a decent job of telling you what sort of catastrophe is looming. Na dzień przed rozpoczęciem imprezy Macworld w San Francisco dał o sobie znać Steve Jobs i w liście skierowanym do wszystkich zainteresowanych poinformował, że znaczny spadek masy jego ciała związany jest z zaburzeniami w gospodarce hormonalnej. Lekarze uważają, że do pełni sił wróci dopiero na wiosnę, ale w czasie rehabilitacji pozostanie szefem Apple’a. Jeśli jednak czekacie na więcej sensacyjnych szczegółów, to będziecie zawiedzeni. Jobs powiedział, że i tak zdradził już więcej niż chciał i jest to absolutnie wszystko co ma na ten temat do powiedzenia.

W San Francisco rozpoczynają się targi Macworld Conference & Expo - impreza od wielu lat przyciągająca uwagę osób zainteresowanych nowinkami ze świata Apple. Tegoroczna edycja konferencji jest pod wieloma względami przełomowa - tradycyjnego przemówienia otwierającego imprezę nie wygłosi bowiem Steve Jobs, a same targi będą na chwilę obecną ostatnimi, na których firma z Cupertino organizować będzie własne stanowisko promocyjne. The New Year is looking very bleak indeed for Creative Technology which has just revealed that it shed 2,700 - almost 50% - of its workforce during the last fiscal year.

The Singapore-based maker of music/media players and PC audio cards and speaker systems has been struggling for years to steal some of Apple’s marketshare and blamed the cuts on poor sales of its music players. Creative makes the well known Zen series of music players.

Widmo tableta Apple’a krąży nad światem… Znowu odżyły pogłoski, że trwają prace nad nowym urządzeniem spod znaku jabłuszka. Zakonspirowane źródła podają, że Mac Tablet miałby zostać przedstawiony światu jesienią tego roku, a prototypy ponoć już trafiły w ręce nielicznych szczęśliwców. Najprawdopodobniej komputer będzie wyposażony w wyświetlacz o przekątnej 7 lub 9 cali, napęd optyczny i pełną wersję OS X. Analityk ośrodka badawczego Gartner, Ken Dulaney, uważa, że stworzenie tableta jest dla Apple’a naturalnym krokiem naprzód, wymaga bowiem jedynie powiększenia touchscreena stosowanego już w iPod Touch oraz dopracowania oprogramowania. Cena nowego urządzenia szacowana jest na $700 - $800 (2100 - 2400 zł).
